Laugher is the best medicine!

As doom and gloom dominates the news, why not try a good giggle to get you happy – it’s good for your health too.

Ho ho - ha ha ha! That’s the anthem of laughter yoga --- a new type of yoga that’s sweeping the world. It was started 10 years ago by a medical doctor, Dr Madan Kataria from India as a way to prescribe laughter for his patients. Now tens of thousands laugh daily and attest that their daily dose of laughter gives them a fresh and positive outlook on life and keeps them happy and healthy.

When was the last time that you really laughed till tears ran down your cheeks, your sides ached and your face was sore? We love to laugh but it seems that belly laughs are disappearing from modern life. Why don’t we laugh more often? As stress, anxiety and tension increase around us, our sense of humor seems to wane and we find less to laugh about.

Help is on its way. Laughter yoga is a new combination of breathing and laughter exercises that can bring the belly laugh back into your life.

Colour Me Beautiful HK Image Consultant & Certified Laughter Yoga Instructor, Ms Veena Dansinghani together with enthusiasts Mrs Honey and Mr Mahesh Pamnani recently teamed up in February 2009 to make Hong Kong a happier place to live by starting regular and FREE sessions of Laughter Yoga.

They started with just seven participants and two weekly sessions and within two months the number has gone up to 50 people and between 3-4 sessions every week. The Laughter yoga team celebrated World Laughter Day on 3rd May 2009 in Kowloon Park. Over 110 people joined & experienced the magic circle of Happiness, Fun & Laughter.

Laughter yoga approaches laughter as a body exercise, combining yogic breathing techniques with modern laughter exercises to get the body laughing. Once the body begins hearty laughter, the mind follows. In fact the body cannot tell the difference between exercise laughter and real laughter --- both have the same benefits.”

Scientific research confirms that laughter is one of the best things our bodies can do. The effects of laughter on our body, mind and immune system are exactly opposite to the negative effects of stress. Laughter reduces illness and makes us happy and healthy.”

Laughter is nature’s counter to stress, and hearty laughter has surprising positive results on our body. Stress increases blood pressure and heart rate, laughter reduces both and dilates blood vessels for better circulation. Stress shuts down our immune system and laughter turns it back on and boosts it in many important ways.

Laughter releases hormones and chemicals that relaxes our body and leave us feeling happy with a positive mental attitude. It eliminates aches and pains, improves communication skills and motivation, increases creativity and enables us to face up to and cope with stressful situations.

20 minutes of hearty laughter is equivalent to 10 minutes on an exercise bike.  Scientific studies have revealed that laughter improves cardiovascular health and reduces high blood pressure. Laughter treats depression. Laughter boosts our body’s oxygen and energy levels. Laughter boosts levels of blood cells that attack cancer, infection and virus. Laughter releases endorphin, a natural pain killer that is responsible for the ‘runner’s high’. Laughter stimulates the lymphatic system and boosts our immune system. Laughter reduces levels of stress poisons in our bodies by 50% or more in minutes. Laughter helps us cope with stress. Laughter speeds healing.

Hearty laughter is an aerobic workout that exercises the heart. Laughter sessions exercise the diaphragm, abdominal, intercostal, respiratory and facial muscles. They include flexing and exercise of the arm, leg, and back muscles. It strengthens our facial muscles reducing wrinkles and leaving us looking younger.

Laughter yoga is available free through more than 5,000 laughter clubs worldwide.  Devotees describe feelings of happiness and joy, of leaving the laughter sessions energized with a positive energy that makes it easy to cope with stress and impossible to be depressed. It is these feelings that keep people coming back for more.

Laughter yoga is very different from the yoga of meditation and yoga postures. It has no pretzel positions, needs no special clothes or training. You don’t even have to be feeling happy or in a good mood, just be prepared to laugh. The results are instant --- you feel the full benefits from your first laughter yoga session.

Laughter Yoga sessions are being conducted FREE OF COST in Life Management Yoga Centre, 11/F, Kimberly House, 35, Kimberly Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong as follows:

Every Tuesday from 0800 am – 0845 am
Every Thursday from 0800 am – 0845 am
Every Saturday from 1930 pm – 2015 pm
